cropped2Hi. My name is Leslie Weighill and I’m the founder of The Real Uganda. We started placing international volunteers in Ugandan led, grassroots organizations in January 2005. And what a ride it’s been.

I absolutely love my job of introducing new people to Uganda. I love working with a variety of young Ugandan leaders as they empower their communities. I love giving small grants that allow single mothers to buy goats and increase their household income.

I’ve also been known to pay school fees for high achieving but needy kids.

I started this blog after living in Uganda for over a decade. I’ve got so many stories to tell and unique perspectives to share. My hope is you dig in and enjoy.

If you’re like me and you like travel, meeting new people and learning cool things, maybe volunteering in Uganda is for you.

    1. Thanks for the appreciation! I’m happy you found us. Please spread the word about the awesomeness of Uganda! I aim to get this country on the bucket lists of people.

All our funds are used in local communities so we don’t have an advertising budget. Social media has been invaluable for us! Please share to support us!

      1. Thanks!! You’ve totally made my day!! We’ve been here doing our thing since 2005, but it’s getting harder and harder every year with global economic recession, the European refugee crisis, and terrorism. People aren’t travelling as much to East Africa anymore. Their hearts are torn in too many directions.

        Stay well!

  1. Hello, I’d like to introduce myself to you, I am a U.S. friend of Gloria Kutessa of Uganda. With her brother, Fred Sseruteega, they run a community-based organization named Save Omwana (child) Africa. They are currently looking after 250 orphans and 40 widows who are HIV‑positive. They are currently feeding and providing programs to help the orphans and widows but they have a short fall. They only have enough funds to send 30 of the 250 children to school. Each semester costs $15 and there are three semesters per year. That is $45 a year for each child! With your help, all the children will be able to go to school and live up to their potential. We hope to decrease poverty and improve literacy to help build a better world. We are reaching out for sponsors to help us send these children to school. Help us change the world for the better. If you wish more information feel free to inbox Gloria or call her +256700397493 or write to her at P.O. Box 12 Lugazi, Uganda.

They are wonderful people who want to give back, and although I donate to them, they still need your resources to continue.

    Thank you for your time.
